We will shortly be updating the central carbon factors in Carbon Desktop for UK emissions. This will be in line with the latest 2023 figures released by the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). These factors will be added today at midday (BST).
These factors are an important part of your carbon reporting. Please get in touch with us if you have any queries regarding the carbon emission factors updates.
The ‘significant proportion’ rule
These factors cover all existing UK emissions sources in the central database. The factors will be applied to the 2023 calendar year in line with DESNZ guidance. The factors are for use with activity data that falls entirely or mostly within 2023. At this time of the year, we update these factors in Carbon Desktop to account for companies with a financial year ending in the first half of the calendar year. These companies should use the 2022 carbon factors, due to those being the correct factors for the majority portion of their financial year.
Companies completing their reporting for the period up until the end of June 2023 should generally be using the 2022 factors.
We include a grace period after the end of June to allow for any reporting timelines. The grace period is also allowed for DESNZ to correct any minor errors in their initial published set of factors.
