We will shortly be updating the central carbon factors in Carbon Desktop for UK emissions in line with the latest 2023 figures released by the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). These factors will be added to Carbon Desktop today at midday (BST).
These factors are an important part of your carbon reporting, please get in touch with us if you’d like further support from us with your carbon reporting.
The ‘significant proportion’ rule
These factors cover all existing UK emissions sources in the central database and the factors will be applied to the 2023 calendar year in line with DESNZ guidance that these factors are for use with activity data that falls entirely or mostly within 2023. We update these factors in Carbon Desktop at this time of year to account for companies with a financial year ending in the first half of the calendar year which should use the 2022 carbon factors due to those being the correct factors for the majority portion of their financial year. Therefore companies completing their reporting for the period up until the end of June 2023 should generally be using the 2022 factors. We include a grace period after the end of June to allow for any reporting timelines as well as for DESNZ to capture and correct any minor errors in their initial published set of factors.
